No spelling or vocabulary next week

We will not have any spelling or vocabulary the week of Dec. 12 - 16. Instead we will be focusing on math and science vocabulary words that are relevant to the scientific method. In math we will finish topic 6 (algebra) and review various lessons taken from topics 1-6.

Science Fair

The science fair is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 27th. It will be a little different than it has been in the past. It will be held in the student's home base classroom. Your student will not need a tri-fold. We will make a small display board in class with construction paper or card stock. We are trying to simplify the entire process. Fifth grade students are busy working on their hypothesis and experiment plans. They should be finished with the research already. The experiment plans are due Friday, Dec. 16th. The experiment should be done over winter break. Fifth grade students will need to return to school with their results from their experiment (data). We will begin the analysis and conclusion the first few weeks of January. Please help your student find a way to keep detailed notes about their experiment. We will need to have some numbers to make the analysis work. For example, if the project is about plant growth, the student will keep track of the plant height.

Weekly Updates

I apologize for not posting in a while. Our 5th graders have been very busy with preparing for the Wax Museum, the excitement of Halloween, Report Cards, Conferences, circulating illnesses, and getting ready for JA BizTown.

YAY!
We want to say how proud we are of all our 5th Graders for the AMAZING work they did preparing for and performing in the Wax Museum.

THANKS!
Thank you very much to our parents who helped with Halloween festivities, and parents who will be helping with BizTown. We appreciate everything you do more than you know.

MATH
We are trying out a new plan in our math instruction. Math instruction in the homebase classroom will still look the same as it has been, however we will now start ending homebase math instruction at 10:00 and students will be divided into 3 groups based on a common assessment score (an assessment given to all 5th graders). The groups will be for re-teaching, re-enforcing, and expanding the learning. Other schools that have done similar groupings have seen great results from it, and we expect to see positive results as well.

CAN YOU CROCHET?
We are hoping to begin learning to crochet on Thursday 12/1 during our rotation times (9-12 am). Please let us know if you are able to crochet and would like to help. We would love to have you.

UPCOMING EVENTS
11/23-11/25 Thanksgiving recess. Enjoy!

We finished typing our rough draft of the Famous American report. This is a research / biography report written in third person (ex. George Washington was born......He.....He....). Students should bring this rough draft home to have at least one adult help them edit it. It needs to be returned to school with all editing marks written by hand so the students can type the final draft on Thurs., 10/27, during our computer rotation. This week we are beginning to explain the oral presentation to the students. It should be written in first person (ex. My name is George Washington ...I......I....). It needs to take between 30 - 45 seconds to recite. This will be written on an index card for easy reference. However, their speech should be memorized. We will practice at least once in class. Parents, family, and friends are welcome to come to the Wax Museum on Mon., Oct. 31 from 11:00 - 12:00.
